Event details

Process art is an artistic movement that emphasizes the creative process over the final product. In process art, the process of making the art, such as gathering, sorting, or patterning, is a significant part of the finished piece, or even the subject itself.

In this class your tween or teen will create beautiful art pieces will merely be a byproduct of our exploration and experimentation. We will work on pieces with multiple steps and focus on the making of the art as well as learning to use new tools and techniques. Choose whichever class you’re most interested in taking!

Class 1- Sunset mosaics on canvas : students will paint base layers of a sunset onto a canvas and then glue mosaic pieces of different hues onto the canvas, fully covering it. To get the complete effect of the process I would have a premixed solution (possibly of different colors) to seal the mosaic and fill in those gaps.

Class 2-Salvador Dali style clocks made of clay: I will give students a brief lesson on Salvador Dali and surrealism. I will show them multiple examples of the “melted” clocks that are in many of his masterpieces. Students will be able to mold and shape their own. I will guide them on making tiny details such as the clocks hands and the “frame of the clock” to create depth. Students will paint their clocks when done.

Class 3- Aluminum Foil Art : students will be given a firm board and will be able to draw something of their liking. Students will glue yarn over every line they created with their pencil, leaving them with a raised ‘outline’. Then, students will carefully glue and cover the entire board with heavy duty aluminum foil. I will teach them to wrap it carefully and how to “smooth” it out over their design. They will now have a raised aluminum piece of their drawing. They can use sharpies to color portions of their drawing in.

Class 4- Cardboard pop art: Students will be asked to think of a scene and a subject. We will then draw that scene on paper. Students will decide what aspects of the scene that they want to pop out the most, and what aspects need to stay in the background. We will talk about background, foreground and the subject. Once happy with their design and once they have a plan on which aspects will “layer” on top of one another, they will begin to cut the pieces of their scene out of cardboard. Students will paint each piece individually then glue together.

Class 5- Cut out paper art: Students will be given a simple prompt (sun and moon or day and night) and will be asked to draw something that makes them think of those subjects. I will encourage students to add lots of variety and try to use as much of the paper as possible. When done, I will ask students to cut out the negative space using an Xacto knife. If there’s time we can layer some images/add a construction paper background.

Class 6- Paper clip art : students will be asked to pick a famous artwork from a few examples that I will bring (for example : Starry night) they will use the artwork that they pick as reference for the next step. Students will be given a multitude of different colored paper clips, students will be asked to arrange the paper clips as closely as they can to match the original artwork. Once they’re satisfied with how they’ve placed the paper clips, they will glue it down.

Class 7- Process painting: this is for students who are willing to get a little messy in the process of painting  in a few different unorthodox ways to paint in rounds so they’re doing it in the same order with a timer set for each round.
Class 8-  Fruit prints: a variety of fruits cut in half (enough where each child can be using one at all times) and students will learn best practices for this type of print  Challenge: make a pattern, or make an original image out of fruit prints
Class 9-Hole punch art: students will choose from a variety of well known artworks. They will use this as reference. Students will be given construction paper and a hole puncher will create a pointillism style version of the artwork they chose as reference. They will try to match the colors as closely as possible and placing the dots in the proper place will be like a puzzle.
Class 10- Drawing in reverse / Oil pastel prints: Students will use one paper to cover almost completely with oil pastels using a variety of colors and think about the placement of those colors. Then, students will draw a subject of their choice onto a separate paper that is placed on top of the oil pastel sheet, when done they will have an imprint on their oil pastels as well as a print on their blank paper.
