Leo Johnson

Leo Johnson is a third generation Cuban-Sicilian, who is still immersed in the art, culture and language. Leo studied painting in San Miguel, Mexico, at a school founded by Diego Rivera, Orozco and Siqueiros, the great Mexican muralists. He has won many awards for his paintings and has shown in New York City, California, and throughout the United States. He had a one man show at Der Flur Gallery in Kassel, Germany in March 2003. He also participated in Spektrale 3 in Berlin, Germany in September 2003.

In my paintings I try to reflect the human spirit— it’s agonies, joys, exuberance and peaks and valleys of everyday life. Also included are the fleeting moments which appear to us once in a lifetime and are gone…Throughout the history of art, mankind has been the motivator, the inspirer, and the force that protects and propels civilization into the future.

I am a visual artist who has shown numerous times in this community, as recently as: March 09- State of Abstraction at the Alliance for the Arts, January 09 Leo and Krista Johnson New Work at Florida Gulf Coast University and in September 08 at the Arts for Act Gallery, Leo and Krista Johnson. I have managed to show my work consistently in local venues over the past 20 years. I have worked in conjunction with many local businesses and non-profit groups such as The Southwest Florida Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, painting a mural for the YMCA in Fort Myers with children and young adults. I consider it important to be active in the community, giving lectures and teaching painting to under-privileged, disabled and at-risk children.
